Hearing loss

Deafness - a life in silence?

11 million people in the UK are deaf or hard of hearing. Individuals with profound hearing loss may have some residual hearing left, which, however, is not sufficient for speech understanding. Children learn to speak by copying what they hear.  If they cannot hear, their speech and language development will be impaired.

Deaf or hard of hearing?

Audiology, the science concerned with the sense of hearing, differentiates between mild, moderate, severe and profound hearing loss. Profound hearing loss is sometimes also referred to as deafness. Definitions of the levels of hearing loss vary slightly. According to the World Health Organization, someone with normal hearing has hearing thresholds of 25 dB or better in both ears.

Hearing and understanding speech

Normal communication takes place at around 65 dB. People with hearing thresholds below that level have difficulty understanding speech, particularly in noisy surroundings. Individuals whose hearing gradually deteriorates often don’t notice their hearing problems for a long time.

Hearing aids and hearing implants are solutions for hearing loss.
